One of these participants stayed after class and told me about her recent trip to Africa. Spending time with animals made her realize how each of them contributed to the earth, like vultures eating dead animals no one else wants. It got me thinking how slugs naturally gravitate to and consume my dog’s poop. Wild boars have 2 layers of fur so they pick up seeds when they wallow in the mud, then disperse those seeds while scratching themselves or rubbing against a tree. There are probably a million examples of how animals take care of each other in the ecosystem. There is no trash in the animal world and they all have a purpose.
So with Earth Day approaching, I wonder what is the purpose of a human being. What do we contribute to the earth? I came home from class and called my mom. She said it’s to be nice to each other. Yah, yah, that feels good, but what do we actually contribute to this planet?
Stay with me, I’ll get around to how her answer makes sense to me now.
So, humans build buildings. Humans have babies and increase the population on the planet. Humans create pollution, humans add a whole lot of plastic to the oceans. And on it goes. The more I thought about it, the more I was tempted to ditch this idea for a blog post and talk about how someone in the class said my flax crackers weren’t nearly tasty as doritos. (and then we could talk about addiction and how food manufacturers are destroying our health : )
Just about the time the image of humans multiplying like a virus and consuming all the earth’s natural resources entered my mind, a fellow drummer friend sent me an email encouraging me to watch a video of a group of street drummers. I welcomed the diversion. They were totally rocking out in sync with one another. The happiness on their faces was contagious. Passerby’s were being uplifted. It lifted my spirits. I got inspired. These humans, with their opposable thumbs were raising the vibration on the planet. What if that’s why humans are here? What if it’s up to us to use our creativity and self-expression to lift this world from 3-D to 4-D to 5-D. I remember listening to music from the Fifth Dimension. I think they were on to something.
We’re here to express our unique selves with dance, music, poetry, sculptures, paintings and might I add, beautiful raw food. Creating a dish like this elevated all of us at the culinary school to a higher plane. Studies show that raw food increases our vibration.
And yes, Mom, we’re being nice to each other. When we offer our artistic talents for others to enjoy we lift their spirits. Maybe this is the best thing we can do on this Earth Day. Being vegan, reducing our consumption, saying no to plastic and driving electric cars is all good. And remember, the vibration you put out does make a difference.
I’d love to hear your comments. What contribution do you think humans make on the planet?
