Mushrooms at a Barbecue: Marching to the Beat of a Different Drummer

Marching to the beat of a different drummer has always been easy for me. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve felt different from the pack. When my friends razz me about bringing a giant mushroom to a barbecue instead of hamburger it doesn’t phase me much. I don’t mind because I know that a portobello mushroom has 30 calories, no fat or cholesterol compared to a 3 ounce hamburger that has 235 calories, 16 grams of fat at 76 milligrams of cholesterol.

Marinating it in balsamic vinegar, water, herbs and a little olive oil deepens the long-lasting, mouth-watering sensation (also known as umami) that our tastebuds love.  Add grilled onions, tomatoes and a whole wheat bun if you like and you have a tasty and satisfying ‘burger.’

Not only do these mushrooms have a chewy mouthfeel like meat, but Dr. Joel Fuhrman suggests we add them to our diet every day to protect against breast, prostate, stomach and colorectal cancers.

I realize it’s not just the facts of a hamburger versus a mushroom. People can have all the information and still find it difficult to change. Different food choices stir up deep-seated beliefs. Clients of mine have confessed they don’t want to feel like an outsider. They want to fit in. They’d rather not have to explain their different food choices to skeptical or sarcastic people, especially at a party.

I work with people who want to transition to a healthy, plant-based diet and get the support necessary to be successful. The next online Healthy Eating class begins August 1, 2013. Go to www.ElementalCuisine.com for the details and get a free personal coaching call if you sign up early.

Happy Barbecuing!
